Gravelrama Showers

Originally built to load gravel into rail cars, this area has become a haven for countless campers to wash up or just cool off on those hot sweltering days.  As many know, this is an open shower area so bathing suits are required and hot water is only available if the sun is shining brightly on the holding tank.  It can be a rude awakening if you wait till early morning for your shower.  The water tends to cool overnight and it can chill you to the bone when it hits.  That doesn't stop many diehard fans as someone can always be found there almost any time of day.

For those familiar with the present shower layout, the picture is taken from the back campground area looking east toward our spectator area.  The bay to the left is the present shower while the right bay is now the road leading from the campground to the spectator area.  The wall to the left is where the holding tank now sits.  If you look closely as you walk through the campground leading to the showers you can find some of the rails still in place in what is now grass areas.  Periodically these rails work their way up just far enough from the ground that the grounds crew has to dig them out so the mowers don't strike them.  The campsite to the right of the showers still shows signs of the foundation that held the conveyors.

Thanks to life long member Bill Turner for this photo.  Bill is one of the founding members of IOK Four Wheelers and still takes an active role in the clubs events as well as maintenance of the grounds.
